Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel speaks about the need for microstamping and other gun violence prevention measures at a recent press conference at City Hall.
Following a recent up tick in gun violence across the country as well as in New York State, Senator Gianaris introduced a series of gun violence prevention bills based on criteria established by the Brady Campaign which ranks each state according to the strength of its gun laws. The legislative package includes proposals that would responsibly strengthen New York’s gun laws and increase protection from gun violence.
Featured in this legislative package is Assemblywoman Schimel’s microstamping legislation, which would provide law enforcement with a critical tool to solve gun crimes. Microstamping allows police officers to trace firearms through cartridge casings found at crime scenes, even if the crime gun is never found.
Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel stated that microstamping and gun violence prevention should be the number one priority for elected officials.
“The need for a comprehensive approach to illegal gun trafficking is validated every day. I will say it again and again; elected officials must put the public safety of its citizens before the interests of the gun lobby. People are dying,” said Assemblywoman Schimel.
