Job Access Reverse Commute (JARC) Program

Department of Transportation

The Job Access Reverse Commute (JARC) grant program will fund eligible projects in the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC) district, which includes New York City, Long Island and the lower Hudson Valley (Rockland, Westchester and Putnam Counties). This grant program is intended to improve access to transportation services to employment sites and employment related activities for public assistance recipients and eligible low-income individuals and transport residents of urbanized areas and non-urbanized areas to suburban employment opportunities. Such services may include, but are not limited to: mobility management, extension of current transportation services, and promotion of those services. The New Freedom formula grant program seeks to reduce barriers to transportation services and expand the transportation mobility options available to people with disabilities beyond the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.

ELIGIBILITY:  Eligible applicants include municipalities, not-for-profit organizations, transportation authorities, Tribal governments and public transportation providers.

FUNDING:  The total funds available for these programs are $11.3 million.

Occupational Safety & Health Training and Education Program

Department of Labor

The Hazard Abatement Board announces the availability of funds for the development and implementation of programs promoting occupational safety and health in the workplace through training, education, and other proven preventative programs. Grants awarded will be based on the number of quality programs approved and the availability of funds.

ELIGIBILITY:  Public and private employers, labor organizations or their federations, trade associations, not-for-profit organizations and educational institutions.

FUNDING:  Total funding for this program will be approximately $6.5 million. Applicants may apply for any portion thereof.

DEADLINE:  March 13, 2009.

Health and Human Services for LGBT Individuals and Families

Department of Health

The New York State Department of Health (DOH) is issuing a request for applications for the Health and Human Services for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered Individuals and Families (LGBT) program. This initiative will fund non-HIV services in communities throughout the state. The goal of the initiative is to develop and provide accessible and appropriate services that are responsive to the needs of the LGBT population, their families and support systems. A range of services may be funded under this initiative. Preference will be given to organizations that have a strong history of service provision to these communities as well as organizations with representatives of LGBT communities on their Board and staff. Applicants must demonstrate a primary commitment, expertise, and ability to serve LGBT individuals, their families, and support systems. They must prove capable of providing direct, preventative, education, and training services to local communities and organizations.

ELIGIBILITY:  Eligible applicants include community-based, not-for-profit health and human service organizations.

FUNDING:  A total of approximately $568,185 has been made available through this grant program. Individual applicants may apply for $56,818.

DEADLINE:  March 20, 2009.

Emergency Capital Repair Grants

Department of Housing and Urban Development

This notice announces the availability of grant funds to make emergency capital repairs to eligible multi-family projects owned by private not-for-profit entities that are designated for occupancy by elderly tenants. The capital repair needs must relate to items that present an immediate threat to the health, safety, and quality of life of the tenants. The intent of these grants is to provide one-time assistance for emergency items that could not be absorbed within the project’s operating budget and other project resources, and where the tenants’ continued occupancy in the immediate near future would be jeopardized by a delay in initiating the proposed cure. The notice provides instructions for owners of multi-family projects to request funding and instructions for the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) field offices to process requests.

ELIGIBILITY:  Private not-for-profit owners of eligible multifamily assisted housing developments.

FUNDING:  A total of approximately $9.5 million has been made available through this program.

DEADLINE:  Though the application deadline is October 1, 2009, HUD will accept applications on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Historic Preservation Grants

Preservation League of New York State

The Preservation League of New York State is a private, not-for-profit organization that works to protect and enhance the Empire State’s historic buildings, landscapes and neighborhoods. The New York State Council on the Arts is the state’s arts funding agency. The Preservation League and NYSCA have collaborated on this grant program annually since 1993. Examples of eligible projects for this grant program include: historic structure reports for public buildings; historic landscape reports for municipal parks; and cultural resource surveys of downtowns and residential neighborhoods. In 2009, the Preservation League especially encourages projects that advance the preservation of architecture and landscapes of the recent past, preserving historic bridges and transportation corridors including rural roads, canals, and related structures. Project should also focus on preserving and continuing to use historic municipal buildings and supporting Main Street revitalization.

ELIGIBILITY:  Municipalities and not-for-profit organizations.

FUNDING:  A total of $96,400 is available, with individual grants likely to range between $3,000 and $10,000 each.

DEADLINE:  May 4, 2009.

Grantsmanship Center

The Grantsmanship Training Program is coming to New York: Binghamton, March 2-6, 2009, hosted by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County.

The classes will be conducted by The Grantsmanship Center and are kept at a maximum of 30 participants. The cost is $895, which includes one-year enrollment in the TGCI Membership Program. A limited number of half-tuition scholarships are available to agencies with annual budgets of less than $300,000.

The Foundation Center has scheduled the following free training opportunities during February 2009:

Grantseeking Basics:
February 4, 11 and 17
Attendees will learn how the Center’s resources can help make them more effective grantseekers. For beginners, this introduction to the library provides instruction in foundation research and identification of potential funders. A tour of the library will follow.

Proposal Writing Basics:
February 6 and 24
Attendees will learn about the basics of writing a proposal for their nonprofit organizations.

Introduction to the Foundation Directory Online:
February 4, 11 and 17
This session provides a hands-on introduction to the Center’s comprehensive Web subscription database.

How to Approach a Foundation:
February 26
Attendees will learn how to initiate contact with potential funders; plan calls and meetings; and build partnerships with donors. This class is intended for fundraisers with some experience, though not necessarily with foundations.

Classes are held at The Foundation Center, New York Library, 79 Fifth Avenue, 2nd Floor in New York City.
