Assembly Stairs

The breathtaking walls of the Assembly staircase are truly a unique feature of the Capitol. The unusual design, now visible again, had been lost, due to peeling, chipping and several repaintings done in flat, dull colors. The stairs themselves, which bore the dirt and discoloration of 120 years of use, now have been thoroughly cleaned. The time-consuming process to duplicate the original design depicted on the walls required slowly peeling away layer after layer of paint, until the original color scheme and pattern were revealed.

Restoring the look of the walls returns the Assembly staircase to a position of prominence among the Capitol’s many points of interest.
