Congratulations to Melissa Mark-Viverito as she is sworn in this evening as the New York City Council Speaker. This is a truly historic occasion as she becomes the Council’s first Latina speaker. I know she will be a beacon of integrity, opportunity and hope for all New Yorkers. A hard-working and dedicated public servant, Speaker Mark-Viverito is a true leader who has dedicated her career to improving the quality of life for New York City’s hard working families, seniors and immigrants, and has been a tireless advocate for tenants' rights. With new leadership throughout city government, we have a tremendous opportunity to give New Yorkers the progressive government they deserve and I look forward to working with Speaker Mark-Viverito to get things done.
