Statement from Speaker Sheldon Silver on Start of
Deferred Action for Immigrant Youth

Today marks a celebration of acceptance and hope for hundreds of thousands of immigrant youth nationwide and tens of thousands here in New York. For a state that has long welcomed immigrants seeking opportunity, the start of deferred action for our immigrant youth is a reason to rejoice. They can dream of education and employment without fearing deportation.

On Monday, the Assembly Majority announced funding for three programs that will help these youth take full advantage of this program. For the federal program to succeed it is imperative that young people learn about the application process and prepare accordingly. These three programs will work to make sure they have the opportunity to participate fairly.

Today, our young immigrants can emerge from the shadows. Lady Liberty declares, and I echo, a golden door to a new future opens today and I stand in celebration with them.
