In a series of statewide hearings last year, the Assembly began the process of examining mistreatment in the state’s system of care for the developmentally disabled. Legislators heard the heartbreaking testimony of the abuses suffered by some of our most vulnerable citizens, and I applaud this agreement to bring more accountability into the way we care for them. With the formation of a truly independent Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs, we are creating a system of oversight that can both ensure positive outcomes and protect those whose rights are violated. This agreement is a victory for those receiving care, their families, and all who champion their right to health and happiness.
