Statement from Speaker Sheldon Silver on Governor's
Signing of Legislation To Make Affordable
Health Insurance Available to Freelancers

With more and more New Yorkers working as freelancers to earn a living, I commend Governor Andrew Cuomo for signing my legislation, which would help ensure that these self employed workers have access to affordable health insurance coverage.

This bill (A.9225) extends the current demonstration program that permits freelancers to secure this coverage with the assistance and oversight of the state Superintendent of Insurance.

These are talented and skilled individuals that are important to New York's 21st century economy. Many high technology industries and emerging companies depend on the work of freelancers to make their operations profitable. I am very pleased that our state will continue this successful program for these workers so they will have a peace of mind, knowing that whether they move from job to job or are working on the same project for several years, they will have access to affordable health insurance in New York State.
