Statement from Assembly Minority Leader James N. Tedisco

On Wednesday, December 14th, I called on Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to convene a special session for the purpose of passing legislation targeting illegal guns and enhancing penalties for violence against police officers. The Senate has already passed many of these measures and they are supported by the Governor.

I am heartened that Governor Pataki is calling a special session for next Wednesday. This is an opportunity to show that protecting the law enforcement community is a top priority for the Legislature. The Assembly Minority Conference has always felt that it is of vital importance to protect those who protect the 19 million people living in New York State. Targeting illegal guns and increasing penalties for those who murder police officers has to be the main focus of this session. The tragic deaths of two New York City police officers demonstrate the need for immediate passage of this legislation.

If Speaker Silver does allow a vote on these measures, I am certain they will pass. I hope he gives us the opportunity.
